Liverpool Football League: The Pride Of Merseyside

Based in Liverpool, Merseyside is a football league known as the Liverpool Football Club founded in 1892 and in 1893 joined the Footbal League. Is Roman’s Loot Always Needed At Chelsea?

With a great recent record in the Premier League, a team of highly-paid and skilled international stars and despite being exceedingly wealthy, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich still faces a serious job over the next few seasons. Debt is the problem which haunts Chelsea at the end of every year and despite Mr Abramovich’s generosity in writing off large portions of the clubs debt, resolving this should be a key issue for the club’s owner.

While Chelsea’s massive soccer merchandise sales may bring in cash, as will the sale of a player or two, sponsorship deals and prize money winnings, the problem is that Chelsea’s costs far exceed their income and so far it has been the owner that has absorbed these debts. With UEFA putting new rules in place that means by 2012, all teams who want to compete have to pass strict financial controls, there is a growing need for Chelsea to find a solution to their debt problems.

The process of stemming the clubs debt began last summer when several high-income first grade players were allowed to leave the club for pastures new. Manager Carlo Ancelotti chose to release or sell quite a few established first team squad men, such as Ricardo Carvalho, Joe Cole, Deco, Juliano Belletti and Michael Ballack and replace them with youngsters promoted from the Chelsea junior ranks. Even this reduction of the playing squad and a higher reliance on younger players has not been fully effective in reversing the club’s annual tumble into debt.

The initial level of investment made by owner Abramovich was targeted at helping Chelsea fast-track to becoming the biggest club not only in English soccer, but also European Leagues and world soccer. Depending on your view, this title is currently held by either of the Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona, or Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Manchester United, and the cause of Chelsea being unable to compete with these three giants of the beautiful game is due to two main reasons:

  • The size of their home stadium in comparison to the size of the competing big three.
  • The fact the club trails behind the other three in terms of merchandise sold worldwide.

Addressing the issue with the size and revenue generating capabilities of Stamford Bridge is something which Roman Abramovich may be reviewing in the near future. Reports have suggested that Stamford Bridge may say goodbye as the home of Chelsea. While no specific details have been confirmed by any sources at the club, speculation has been rife that Mr Abramovich is considering moving the club into a purpose built new stadium, of at least 60,000 capacity, and such a move is a must if Chelsea are realistically hoping to claim the status of the world’s biggest club.

The proposed new ground and its higher capacity will have a instantaneous, positive effect on improving Chelsea’s financial situation. The added revenue from the larger ground would, assuming the club can sell the additional tickets, provide considerably more income for the club during each home game. In turn, this added income will help decrease the strain the club endures from its annual debt and means that Chelsea is in a far better position to follow the new UEFA guidelines, which need to be followed by 2012.

Additionally, building a new ground will enable Chelsea to organize a lucrative sponsorship deal over the name of the ground, as fellow Premier League team Arsenal did when they sold the naming rights to Emirates stadium.

Merchandising sales could also be improved by a new stadium, more seating means more fans and this will have a continuing effect in other overseas markets, hopefully those in East Asia and North America.

The long term success of Chelsea hinges on the owner investing his time and money not just in players, but in the home turf of the club. Making the next step towards becoming the world’s biggest club is obvious; Chelsea must develop a new stadium that matches the sky-high goals of their owner and fans and only then will they truly be considered amongst the world’s elite soccer clubs.

The Players Who Make Chelsea Work

When you have a squad that is so packed with talented individuals, it seems churlish to even suggest that there are around four or five players who generally make the team tick. In this article we take a look at five Chelsea players who seem to hold an inordinate amount of influence on how the team performs.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Captaining both Chelsea and England John Terry sets the standard for the other players to adhere to. Willing to defend by any means necessary with skill and bravery, showing technically sound style and a great amount of skill. Always a danger at set pieces and never afraid to lead by example, you could not find a better player to captain your club and country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

He may not be the most popular player amongst Arsenal fans, but despite their bile, Ashley Cole is still, arguably, the best left back in world soccer. His form and confidence has not been consistently great, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. He is known for keeping players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi quiet in games. That’s not luck, only a world class left back can pull it off.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Last seasons injury made all Chelsea fans realise how important a role Mikael Essien played, even in a midfield that boasts so many outstanding, world class players. Essien helps balance the midfield. With first class defensive skill and a high work rate not to mention a great intelligence for the game. He gets forward well and packs a powerful shot from distance. His role within the team defiantly makes the 24.4 million pounds it cost to transfer him seem like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

What’s a team without a midfielder who can score plenty of goals? Lampard is one of the best around. This season he has been deployed in a slightly deeper role under Carlo Ancelotti and the result has been a marked return to form for the midfielder and the goals are once again going in. Frank Lampard is a vital source of attacking strength due to his accurate shooting and ability to link play with his strikers.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

There are many who believe that Didier Drogba is the finest attacker in world at the moment, and on current form, it is hard to dispute that. Didier Drogba wearing the new Chelsea soccer jersey makes all defenders fear the upcoming game. The big striker may have his critics, who lambaste his theatrics when he falls over when tackled, or who bristle at his continual insistence to argue with officials and opposition players, but on his day the Ivorian striker is unstoppable. His presence, goals and power are a key element of Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea and at times this season, he has carried the team on his back. He alone may end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier League.

Is The Michael Owen Experiment Working?

One unexpected transfer that took place last Summer was that of Michael Owen, the often injured striker from Newcastle United who made the move to the Red Devils.

Alex Ferguson’s decisions left many experts and fans scratching their heads. With Cristiano Ronaldo gone, most people expected that a current soccer great would appear in the latest Manchester United soccer apparel to replace him. however, United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who has been struggling with fitness and form over the last five years along with more injuries than one can count. To make matters worse of course, he is a former Liverpool player. There were a few bemused faces around Old Trafford the day the deal was announced.

When the details of the deal became known along with Ferguson’s intentions for Owen, it became clear that Alex Ferguson had, as always had a plan. Michael Owen is signed on a pay if you play contract at Manchester United and he was intended to be used from the bench. He would be used to assist from the bench when needed, he would not be the lone striker.

Only managing to play in a few games as a late substitute it was not the start the Michael Owen would have wanted. Michael Owen’s last minute goal against Manchester City showed the role Alex Ferguson had planned for him in the team. It seemed the goal would kick start a greater involvement for Owen and there was talk of him possibly regaining his England place, should he continue to score goals and play more consistently.

Owen has not managed to continue his form however. Only managing to score four goals from eighteen games this season (many of which he only appeared as a substitute however), there seems to be a growing feeling that the Owen experiment may not have a long term future.

Owen’s chances of regaining a place in the England team are getting slimmer by the day it seems. Fabio Capello’s need for players to be fit and playing consistently makes Owen’s chances very low.Owen has not managed to be do either of these over the last few years. However it should be known that Capello doesn’t seem to apply this rule to all of England’s strikers, Emile Heskey it seems is a shoe-in in every squad, regardless of whether he plays for Aston Villa or not.

So for the time being, Owen’s wonderful last minute goal against City has been the high point of the experiment so far.It will be highly unlikely for Alex Ferguson to continue the agreement with Michael Owen unless the former English striker can find form and consistency in the remainder of the season, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. Whether Owen has the ability and level of fitness to do that remains questionable and as such, it seems likely that Sir Alex’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
